Professional Exchange Program
The Professional Exchange program is a full educational program offering clerkships to medical students abroad. Since the very beginning, in 1951, it was evident that exchange of medical students would be one of the main fields of action in IFMSA.
As early as 1952, a total of 463 students spent a period of practice abroad, and today, it continues to be the backbone of the Federation and constitutes its longest running project. Annually, around 13,000 students from more than 90 countries travel around the world to discover new health systems, new cultures and to enhance their global health and intercultural understanding.
At EMSA-ETHIOPIA SCOPE, we connect Ethiopian medical students with international exchange opportunities and host international students for clinical rotations in Ethiopian hospitals.
Program Features
Clinical Experience
Gain valuable hands-on clinical experience in foreign healthcare systems under the supervision of experienced physicians. Rotations typically last four weeks and are available in various medical specialties.
Cultural Exchange
Immerse yourself in a new culture, learn about different approaches to healthcare delivery, and build international friendships with medical students from around the world.
Professional Development
Enhance your CV with international experience, develop adaptability in diverse healthcare settings, and gain perspective on global health challenges and solutions.
Accommodation
Exchange students are provided with accommodation arrangements throughout their stay, making it easier to focus on their clinical experience and cultural immersion.
Social Program
Participate in organized social activities, city tours, and cultural events designed to introduce you to local culture, cuisine, and attractions.
Language Support
Receive basic language assistance when needed, though most clinical exchanges are conducted in English or with translation support available.

Exchange Experiences
My exchange program in Ethiopia was life-changing. I learned so much about tropical medicine and had the opportunity to observe conditions I'd only read about in textbooks. The EMSA team was incredibly welcoming and made sure I had a great cultural experience too.
As an Ethiopian medical student, my exchange in Germany broadened my perspective on healthcare delivery. The experience of working in a highly digitized hospital environment has inspired ideas I hope to implement back home in the future.
The month I spent in Addis Ababa opened my eyes to the challenges and innovations in resource-limited settings. The doctors were incredibly skilled and the SCOPE team organized amazing weekend activities that helped me experience Ethiopian culture.
